CPI
Generalities
CPI stands for California Psychological Inventory. The CPI was initially developed by H. Gough. The first publication goes back to 1957. The CPI is maintained and distributed by CPP Inc., Mountain View, CA, USA.
Assessment
The test comprises 462 True/False items. It measures 20 scales and three vectors (or factors). The scales are set up in such a way that the first ones are related to dimensions that are observable and social (sociability, social presence), the one in the middle to internal qualities (responsibility, self control) and the last ones to more general variables related to various functioning modes (intellectual efficiency, flexibility).
The time for taking the CPI is about 60 minutes. Two other short and long versions of the CPI exist: the CPI260 and CPI 434.

Statistics
Many reliability and validity studies are available It is not meant to be utilized in team building or managerial applications. As compared to the MMPI, the CPI utilizes normal scales from a standard population, which enables one to be relatively confident in the quality of the measures, which are far from the norm.
Usage
The CPI is not only utilized for recruiting but also in clinical situations.
Comments
The CPI can be taken in paper/pencil mode and in front of a computer (2006). The CPI is translated into a dozen languages.
